Anyone who skates or snowboards or watches either of those sports will know there are a massive variety of grabs out there. Surfing is no different, however the number of grabs that are commonly used in surfing are nowhere near the amount that skaters and snowboarders use. Pretty much all the grabs that can be found in surfing and skating are possible on a surfboard albeit a lot harder to pull as well as a lot of them will look and feel really awkward.
We are not taking anything away from boarders and skaters here but to do a grab on a surfboard is a lot harder. Your board is bigger, your not strapped in and you are dealing with very unpredictable ramps that are always moving and your not entirely sure wheter one will appear on a wave or not. When you do eventually get a good section to try an air your not always in the correct mind set to experiment with a new grab.
The main grabs that you see getting laid down in surfing are the following:
Double GrabA double grab can be pulled whether you are going frontside or backside. It is done by grabbing your board with both hands. Place your leading hand on your heel side rail and your trailing hand on your toe side rail.
Frontside

A frontside grab is the most common grab you see people doing. As the name suggests you need to be on your frontside to do this grab (if you were doing it on your backside it would be called an Indy), it is simply using your trailing hand (right if you are Regular left if you are Goofy) to grab the rail in between both your feet on your toe side.
Lien
A Lien air is also done on your frontside by grabbing your heel side rail towards the nose of your board with your leading hand
Method
Here are the most common grabs with what hand you need to use and where abouts on your board you need to grab.
