Carving reverses are a great way to mix up an old school power move with a new school spin (reverse) at the end. We are going to teach you how to do a carving reverse on your frontside.
It’s a 3 stage move but it has to be done so it looks like it happened in one fluid motion.
The first step is the carve which you should be very familiar with by now.
The second is a tailslide at the end of the carve.
And the third is to keep sliding the tailslide round until you go into reverse and spin a full 360 out of the manoeuvre.
A 360 is different to a reverse because with a 360 you spin on your toe side rail of your board and a reverse you spin on your heel side rail. Essentially a reverse is doing a backside 360 on your frontside. Take a second to really think about that because if you learn how to do backside 360’s then frontside reverses will come a lot easier to you.
So how do we do them? You want a fair bit of speed with a nice open face up ahead of you. Come off the bottom and head to the top of the wave, you are going to want to start a carving cutback, so you start the carve and then you want to cutback towards the foam all in one motion. As you cutback towards the foam you want to go into a tail slide, which you should have learnt in lesson 15. This is an essential part of the turn. Once you are in a tail slide you will have most of your weight on your front foot, what you need to do now is keep your shoulders open. If you were just doing a tail slide you would have your shoulders open but then when you wanted to come out of the tailslide and go back along the wave you would close them to stop the slide. So to get into a reverse you need to keep your shoulders open and keep pushing your tail round, by doing this your board will start going backwards down the face, keep centered over your board and rotating your shoulders like you are trying to look over your leading shoulder and behind you (left shoulder if your regular foot right shoulder if you are goofy). This will keep you spinning until you have done a full reverse 360.
