An off the lip reverse is a mixture of a Reo and throwing the fins out but with a spin at the end to add critical and radical ness!
It’s a pretty difficult move that relies on having a decent wave, speed, timing, body positioning and control so there is a lot that goes into making this move happen!
You can do this move without a grab but we are going to teach you how to do one with a grab as it’s a bit easier to stay in control and get the reverse all the way round.
First you don’t need to be flying down the line to do this move but you do need a bit of speed to get the fins free and make the rotation. What you will be looking for is a crumbly softish looking lip or closeout section up ahead.
When learning this you don’t want to come out of your bottom turn too vertically because the more vertical you are the harder it is to get the rotation round and stay in control.
Approach the lip and as you hit it you want your board to be almost parallel with the lip. This is where all the timing comes in, if you hit too early there wont be enough push in the lip to spin you around and if you hit too late you will fly off the back of the wave or get stuck on top of the white water.
As you hit the lip you want to really kick your back foot out and get plenty of pressure on your front foot. At the same time as kicking your tail out you want to grab your rail and twist your head, body and shoulders round to make the rotation that your board will follow a split second later.
As you come down the foam backwards keep your weight evenly distributed, remember if you have too much weight on the tail it will dig in and if you have too much on your front foot you will get stuck in the white water and wont be able to ride out of it. As you come down backwards let go of your rail when you feel comfortable, its usually done right after you complete the spin and are going backwards. Slightly twist your shoulders and wait for the fins to bite back into the wave. Depending on which way you have twisted your shoulders will determine which way you will spin out of the move. For it to be classed as a complete reverse though you need to have done a full 360 rotation by the time you have spun out and are facing the beach again.
