38. Superman Air

superman air surf

Right,.. now we are really heading to the future! Some of the best surfers in the world have moves like the Superman absolutely dialled but to the rest of us we cant even start to think how to pull one!
We are going to try and break it down for you so next time you get a nice little air section you already know what you need to do in your head before you try it.
The Superman is a very fast move, you have to try and squeeze a number of very technical aspects into a split second to pull this thing, that’s what makes it so hard.

A great place to try and get your head around superman’s is to start by trying them off the back of the wave. By doing this you are less likely to get tangled up with your board at the bottom a wave, which could result in injury and board damage.

So lets try and do them. First you need a good amount of speed so that you can launch out the top of the wave and into the air. Eye your section up ahead and go for it. The softer the landing is on a section the easier you will find it.
As you launch out the wave you want to do an air with your board still at your feet but then as soon as you get out the top let your board drift away from them so that it is in front of you. If you try and kick your board out in front of you without properly taking off into an air with it first chances are you wont get very high and your board will fly away.
Some guys like to do a big double grab air and then once in that position do the superman. The problem with this is it takes up so much time and believe me you haven’t got much time to waste up there. If you are to try and do it the double grab way then you want to be launching very high out the top of the wave to have a chance of pulling it. For that reason we believe letting your board drift away from your feet in front of you is the easier option.
As your board floats away from your feet and in front of you, you have to get a quick solid grab and kick your feet out for style. If your grab isn’t solid then you’re going to find it very hard to get your feet back on it.
As you get the grab you want to be spotting your landing. As your coming down you need to lift your legs up and let go of your board so that you can get your legs and body above your board in order to place your feet back on the deck. Timing is very important when doing this as well as how you let go of your board. Like with any difficult move in surfing it might take you years to get your head around it but when you finally do you will have a smile from ear to ear.
