03. Waxing Up

surf waxSo you have learned how to pop up on the sand and you know that you are either a goofy or regular foot, one of the most important things to do now is wax up your board. Without wax even the best surfers in the world probably wouldn’t be able to stand up on a surfboard, they certainly wouldn’t be able to do turns. You have to have wax on the deck of your board, it’s as simple as that.
There are loads of different brands of wax out there, A couple of our favourites are, Sex Wax, Famous and Mrs. Palmers but any recognised surf wax will do you good especially when you are learning.

A lot of people use a base coat as well as a top coat when they wax their boards, by using a base coat it will make you wax job last a lot longer and act as a primer for your top coat.
A base coat is generally a tropical temperature (made for surfing in tropical water) wax, in other words the hardest wax that you can get your hands on. Wax varies in softness depending on what water temperature it is intended for. The rule of thumb is this: Cold water requires very soft wax whereas Warm tropical water requires very hard wax so that is doesn’t melt off your board.
There are a number of different degrees of wax from all the brands out there depending on water temp. Remember that the top coat is the one that should match up the water temperature where you are going to be surfing and the bottom or base coat should be a hard tropical wax.
Make sure the deck of your board is clean, dirt and grease free. Get your fresh bar of wax out rub it onto your board in circular motions, use the edge of the block rather than the flat surface as this will give you better humps/lumps. Do this from the tail of your board to about ¾ of the way up it, stand next to your board with your surfing stance and make sure that there is plenty of wax covering all the area that you might stand up. Remember it is way better to have too much of your board area covered in wax than too little. Rub all over until you get an even amount of coverage and that there are no little areas left without.
