10. Generating Speed
Now that you can go along waves and manoeuvre your board to a certain degree its time to learn how generate speed and go fast along waves.
Every single wave possesses a sweet spot that is loaded with energy to make you go fast. To begin with you wont be able to see these areas so the key is to find them by moving your board up and down the wave face as you go along. The motion of moving your board up and down is called “Pumping” and it is the most effective way that you can generate speed on a wave.
The more you pump on waves and find the sweet spots the more you will become aware of them and be able to visually see them. It sounds weird but once you start getting that feeling you will know what you need to look for in a waves curve and on the surface. The faster and harder you pump your board the more speed you will generate out of each pump. However don’t run before you can walk, someone who is trying to pump a board super hard before they have the correct motion down will make their surfing style look really ugly! If you don’t get the correct motion down first then it doesn’t matter how hard you pump you wont be able to generate any speed, all it you will be doing is looking like you have a horrible style.
A rule of thumb is that you will be
able
to generate a lot more speed and have more control on a wave that is a clean green faced wave rather th
an a wave that is covered in a layer of white water and foam. The way a wave ends up getting cover
ed in white water is if the wave in fron
t of it is bigger. The bigger the wave
generally means the further out it will break. So if a big wave breaks then the smaller one behind it does then the smaller one will be breaking in messy white water caused by the wave in front.
This is known as a foamy wave and is a lot harder to generate speed on due to the pockets of air coming to the surface (the white stuff), these pockets of air means your board is going to feel a little less stable under your feet and your boards fins aren’t turning against solid H20 but hare having to slip and slide through the air bubbles.
