If you really want to blast your tail out on your backhand and get people take notice of your surfing why not bust out a backside reverse!! When executed correctly this turn looks sick. The key is to do it off the lip as a Reo. You can do them on the face but they look pretty weak. Another way of doing them is at the end of a backside cutback but we are going to teach you how to do them as a Reo.

A lot that you have to do to nail this move is written about in lesson 13. Reo’s. So make sure you read that and you can pull them off first before moving onto this lesson. If you can pull Reo’s off on a regular basis and are comfortable with them its time to get those fins loose and chuck a spin in the mix.

How to Bust a Backside Reverse

When attempting a backside reverse you need to do this - As you come off the bottom you need to spot the section of the lip you are going to hit. You need to be very committed going into this turn to be able to pull it. Make sure that your body is turned and looking up at that section your going to hit. As you hit the section shift all your weight onto your back foot to really push the tail out, at this point you should have already turned your head, shoulders and body so that you are looking back towards the white wash on the wave, this will get you going backwards and keep you centered over your board. The key to initiating the backside reverse is timing, if you hit the lip too late you will fly out the top of the wave, hit it too early and you will find it extremely difficult to slide your fins round. As you hit the lip you really need to keep your body rotating in order to stay on top of the spin. If you don’t rotate your body correctly the board will fly away from your feet. As you go down the face backwards make sure you are centered over your board with the majority of your weight on your front foot, as your fins catch and you start to spin back the right way add more weight to your back foot to stop the spin from throwing you off the board. Thats it, I'm sure you will need a good few attempts before pulling this one clean but when you do nail it the timing and feeling of the backside reverse will be installed in your senses and make it much easier to nail in the future!
