Surf Wax

Surf Wax info
Surf wax is probably hands down the most essential accessory in surfing!
Without wax you have no hope in staying on your board, Surf wax provides you with grip so that you can stand on your board and stay standing wave after wave. Without surfboard wax even the best surfers in the world wouldn’t be able to stand and do a turn it is just that important.
Surfboard Wax Brands
There are a number of top surf wax brands out there each offering their own unique substance to what they consider the perfect formula for surfboard wax. Probably the leading and most well known brand is Sex Wax but we can’t forget companies like Mrs Palmers and her five daughters, Sticky Bumps, Magma wax, Bubble Gum, Famous, and ocean and earth. All these companies produce very high quality surfboard wax, which one you choose is all about personnel preference so we recommend that you try a number of different wax brands until you find the one that is right for you. You will notice that depending on the brand you choose and the type of wax that the company is offering will have a big effect on the grip of your board, this is where the personnel preference comes in. For instance Sex Wax make their traditional wax and they also make one called Quick Humps. Now the difference in these to compounds is quite drastic. The traditional sex wax offers quite a fine thin coating over your surfboard that doesn't appear to be grippy to the eye but has a very grippy consistency. On the other hand quick humps tends to hump up into nipples giving you a visible grippy texture. Personally I like both and swap and change between depending on what I have got available to me. For best effect though I would suggest not mixing different surf wax brands on 1 board. It is always better to stick to one brand and if you want a change then de-wax your whole board with a wax comb and start again.
Choosing the right Surf Wax
Surfboard wax comes in different temperature compounds so it is very important that you get the right surf wax for your local water temperature. In other words you can’t use the same wax in Indonesia that you would in Santa Cruz. The warmer the water is the harder the board wax you need and vice versa, the colder the water is your going to need a softer wax. Each brand has their own way of advertising their different compounds but it is usually along the lines of Cold water wax, Cool Water, Warm Water surfboard wax and Tropical Water so choose your surf wax wisely, if your not too sure ask you local surfshop which one you should be using and they should be able to point you in the right direction.
